Identity in Christ

Writer's picture: The Future Mrs. ZoomerThe Future Mrs. Zoomer

I wrote this back in August 2019 and stumbled across it today. I thought I would share it here. It's still true!

Identity: something that encapsulates who a person is, what they believe in, what represents them. Something that displays what they have accomplished and what characteristics they embody. This can include many things, from sports and activities to having a family or a career, from being a wild and cheerful extravert to a silent but observant introvert. It can range from music to science, math to language, or building to sewing. But for me, it is none of these. While I enjoy making music, reading, spending time with my family, and much more, these things do not define who I am. They are not my identity. My identity lies in Christ alone; this cannot be shaken. Without Christ I am nobody and I have nothing. I am desolate, useless, and helpless. I am dead in my sin. I do not represent anything good on my own. On my own I am a sinful being, not fulfilling the purpose I was created for. But in Him, I represent the Kingdom of Heaven. I am a disciple of the Lord my God and I go into the world knowing that my Creator is with me and that He has a purpose for me; that He will do wonderful things in my life. I have accomplished nothing on my own, but He paid the price for my sin, dying on the cross and carrying my burden on His shoulders and because of that, I will be able to enter the Kingdom of God and live eternally. He has given His life for me, so I rejoice. It is because of these things that my identity lies in Him. He is my Savior, my King, my Life, my Identity.

I will always serve my God with my whole heart, mind, soul, and strength. He guides me along the right path (His path), and He is there to help me when I stumble or fall. Even when I am dead at the bottom of the ocean or deeper in my sin, He breathes new Life into me and redeems me. I know that no matter what, He is for me, and because of that, nothing can stand against me, because nothing is more powerful than the Lord. Even when I hit rock bottom, I won’t question His faithfulness to me; sometimes He allows this to happen to remind me that He is the Rock at the bottom, my strength and foundation. He is perfect, holy, and King over everything and I belong to Him. I am proud to more than just weak; to be helpless and dependent on Him; because He told us through Paul in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that His power is perfected in our weakness and because of that I can rejoice to have my identity in Him. He gives me peace (Ephesians 2:14), He forgives me (Colossians 1:14), He chose me; I am His precious child, His most prized treasure (John 1:12), He gives me Life eternal with Him in Heaven, in all holiness and perfection, with no more sin (Ephesians 2:5-6), and I am completed; fulfilled; by God who is Holy (Ephesians 3:19). This is how I know that my identity lies in Him. He represented me on the cross, taking my burden and carrying it for me, dying for me and atoning for my every sin. He is my Savior and my God and absolutely nothing can change that because He is the Most High, the King of Kings, the Lord of Lords. He is my everything, and nothing can stand against me because I know Him. This is my identity.
